languages and culture day at GSS KUBWA: Students Cast News in Three Major Languages

Students Cast News in Three Major Languages
The Head of Department, Languages of Government Secondary School Kubwa, Mrs. Esther Kanu, has lauded the success of this year’s languages and culture day. Speaking with Crystal Education News shortly after the event, Mrs. Kanu described the entire event as ‘fulfilling.’ According to her, language remains the force that is uniting everybody and that was why she themed this year’s edition as ‘Languages for Unity.’
However, the success of the event was not without challenges, as the event was almost canceled. “There were challenges at the beginning. Initially, the event was almost canceled, but I told my principal that this is our annual event and it is mandatory for us to carry it out, he saw reasons with me and gave us the opportunity to go ahead.” she said. “The teachers on the other hand are very hardworking. But you have to control them very well. Sometimes they would seem not to be serious, but when they come out, it is always in full force and they give their best. That is exactly what my departmental teachers have done. They showed that they can give their best. And on the part of the students, you will pursue them this way and they will follow the other way; but as teachers, we still ensure that these children are under us to control and being train, we were able to catch them and then exhibit what we had today.”

We have been able to inculcate culture into the students. They were able to cast news in Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo. They translated it themselves from the scripts they were given just the previous day . ” The impact is awesome, she pointed, noting that some of them that have never been to their village were able to exhibit their culture during the cultural dances. This, she stressed meant that they were able to achieve their aim.
She looks forward to a better performance next year, as she would say, “We keep improving every year.”
Also expressing delight of the entire event was Mrs. Deborah Agim, the Mother who spoke with Crystal News shortly after the event.
“Today is a very special day to me because I am a core African woman. I love the African culture and I love propagating the African culture wherever I find myself not minding the kind of persons that are there. The ultimate aim of the activities that took place today is to propagate the African culture.
Nigeria is a country with diverse cultures. We have different tribes, different traditions and languages. So a day like this is a day where our young children come out to showcase their different talents, with our local languages, news read in the three major languages as well as borrowed languages which is English language and the French language, is really awesome. It is a day they come out to see that they are good to some extent at what they've been learning for years. From this, the teachers can know if they have been doing a good work or not. At this point they should be able to tell themselves “wow! We have done well” or “we need to improve on this area or the other for a better outing next year.”
She also advised all the students to carry on with the good works. They should not take any assignment given to them for granted. Wherever they find themselves, No matter how little that assignment is, they should consider it very meaningful.
“Most leaders we have today were made, others were born. So, it is now left for you to identify “are you a born leader?” and if you are not a born leader, you can make yourself a leader by coming out, learning from those who you think have some good qualities, so that you too, wherever you find yourself, you will glow.” she said
To the organizers, she said “keep it up, keep the flag flying, and inculcate more of this language culture in the children.”
